What is Dance/Movement Therapy?
Sometimes words aren’t enough, or can be too difficult to find. Dance/Movement Therapy, also known as DMT is a holistic approach to counseling that blends together movement and emotional expression to support healing from the inside out. DMT is rooted in the understanding that the body and mind are deeply interconnected. Healing begins not only by understanding our thoughts, but by reconnecting to the body to access a deeper level of emotional awareness.
Through gentle movement and guided explorations, Dance/Movement Therapy can help individuals:
Explore and express emotions they may not be able to verbalize
Reduce stress and tension stored in the body
Improve self-esteem and build confidence
Improve impulse control and emotional expression
Heal from anxiety, depression, trauma, chronic pain, and more
Sessions may include structured activities, improvisational movement, mindfulness techniques, or small, expressive gestures that allow feelings to come to the surface without needing to be spoken.
What to Expect in a Session
DMT can be done in individual and/or group sessions. Sessions can vary, however, they typically consist of the following outline:
Warm-up
Breathwork, body scans, gentle movements/gestures, guided stretches
Movement Exploration
Mirroring, authentic movement, structured prompts
Emotional Processing
Reflection on felt experience, identifying common themes
Closure
Breathwork, body scans, grounding exercises, check-in
No Dance Experience is Required!
Dance/Movement Therapy is a powerful tool to help reconnect with your body while creating a safe, supportive space for both physical and emotional healing. It is important to note that DMT welcomes all bodies and abilities. Dance/Movement Therapy is for everyone. DMT benefits all ages and you do not need to know how to dance, all you need is a body and a willingness to be open to how the body moves, holds, and heals.
